Nevada State Fair Press Release State Fair livestock competition is a payoff for many months of work Contact: Steve W. Schroeder (775) 825-2665 www.nvstatefair.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 14, 2008 State Fair livestock competition is a payoff for many months of work The Nevada State Fair is scheduled for August 20-24 on the grounds of the Reno Livestock Events Center. This years’ substantial entry list is attributed to youth leaders in each community reaching out to the children in FFA and 4H. The youth leaders are committed to challenging children with the values and responsibilities of being a good fair competitor as well as a good citizen. The fair now offers more for children in rural or ranching communities as well as within metropolitan areas and cities. Over 2600 entries were made in the livestock category for this year’s fair. Entries to the fair this year are consistent with other years and 4-H youth have entered from all over the state. The Silver Dollar Youth Livestock Auction, taking place Saturday, August 23 is a great opportunity to purchase wholesome meat that has been raised properly by people you know and trust. The auctioneer is Dr. Greg “Lighting” William of Lightning Auctions and the auction is sponsored by Nevada State Bank. Only the red and blue ribbons are sold at auction to guarantee the highest quality of meat. The meat has no artificial products and is hormone free. Organizations like Washoe Grill, Save Mart, Raley’s, Safeway and Scolari’s will be present to bid on the livestock. Categories are steers, goats, pigs and lambs. There is an increase in need for market goats. Support the auction and help give back to the children that spend a year raising, caring for and feeding an animal. Your purchases are considered a non-profit charitable donation to the Nevada State fair for any amount paid above and beyond the normal market price for the animal. See and support our local youth involved in 4-H and FFA. Youth events range from small animal shows to beef, sheep, swine and goats for market or for breeding. Fair entries in livestock competition consist of animal categories such as, dairy cattle, Hereford cattle, horse, sheep, market goats, dairy goats, swine and rabbit to name a few. Also included in the livestock category are dog and guinea pig. One of the favorite competitions is the dog competition. Young 4-H ‘ers from the age of 5 can enter and show their dog, knowledge of animal care and obedience training skills. The health of the animal is judged as well as the demeanor of the dog. Whether you live on a ranch, in a small town or in a city the Nevada State Fair has something to offer for all. The goal is to see more children from non-rural areas ask about 4-H or FFA in their cities or towns and get involved. Having more children enter the livestock competition will also expose each of the children to seeing the other categories and is always good for raising awareness of 4H and spurring interest in the fair.
